Caroline Spence - vocals, rhythm guitar, glockenspiel, keys, knobs
Caroline started writing songs at the age of 2 on a piano that looked suspiciously like Schroeder's piano from Peanuts. However, she could never quite get it to sound as good as he could, hmm! :D Caroline has been singing her heart out most of her life. She started writing lyrics in high school but only began writing songs in earnest in 1996. She has since written over 400 songs to date. Many of them complete garbage. But some turned out pretty well, so she performs those ones.
Caroline trained for a number of years with Mitch Seekins, Canadian opera singer and vocal coach to Emm Gryner, Hawksley Workman, Margo Timmins, and many others. Her her solo EP 'hello' was produced and engineered by Michael Jack (Jann Arden, Rush, The Trews).
She was one of the originating members of the enigmatic indie band, AITI MAA, that played and toured around Toronto for many years. She wrote songs, sang lead and harmony and played rhythm guitar. She has also helped with other music projects for bands and for independent movies.
Caroline was part of the Torontoindiemusic.com networking group for independent musicians and was part of the successful 'Consider This...' compilation CD and tour. That project saw the CD played across Canada on college radio, CBC radio and being sold in HMV stores in Canada. How great it was to hear her track played on the HMV listening station, main floor, downtown Toronto HMV! She now volunteers her time as part of the Cornerstone Records & Entertainment Collective in Victoria, helping independent artists achieve their career goals. A long time member of the Canadian Independent Music Collective, she puts in many volunteer hours helping other independent artists with business, promotion and resource support. She has organized and promoted numerous multi-artist tours across Canada.
Caroline was one of those young people who was told she would never be a singer, but knowing in her heart that she had something special to share with the world, she never gave up and is well on her way to being the singular singer and star that she was meant to become. Full of kindness and grace, a sense of humour and a strong theatrical bent, Caroline is one of those performers it is a joy to watch. Drawing you into that delicious voice and a world of songwriting that is a blend of improvisation, poetry, exploration and solid craft. Her music is accessible and classic, and she is well on her way to becoming a great Canadian artist we will enjoy for years to come.
Fun Facts: Caroline has travelled to the Arctic Circle, visiting Tuktoyuktuk and revelling in pingo viewings and muskeg romps. She has also walked on fire. But not at the same time, of course.
